VA Home Care Benefits

Many senior veterans aren’t aware that they may qualify for a wide range of in-home care services through the VA Community Care Network. These benefits are designed to help veterans remain safe, supported, and independent at home while easing the caregiving burden for families.

Eligible services can include:

  • Homemaker and Home Health Aide Services – Support with daily activities, personal care, and household tasks.

  • Skilled Home Healthcare – Nursing, wound care, therapy, and clinical support provided in the home.

  • Home-Based Primary Care – Ongoing medical care delivered by a VA primary care team for veterans with complex health needs.

  • Respite Care for Families – Temporary relief for family caregivers, giving them time to rest and recharge.

  • Adult Day Health Care – Social engagement, supervision, and therapeutic activities in a safe daytime setting.

  • Telehealth Services – Remote monitoring and virtual medical visits to support ongoing care.

What Types of VA Benefits Can Help With In-Home Care Costs?

We understand that cost may be a concern for some veterans. The VA covers some, but not all, veteran senior care services.Veterans Aid and Attendance (A&A) and Housebound Allowance are additional programs that can help veterans pay for in-home care. They work by increasing your monthly pension amount to help pay for short- or long-term care.

VA Aid and Attendance

The VA Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefit helps veterans and surviving spouses pay for the daily care they need due to a temporary or permanent illness, disability, or a decline in functional ability. This benefit can be used for short-term support or long-term in-home care.

To qualify for VA Aid & Attendance, you must:

  • Have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized period of war,

  • Have a discharge status other than dishonorable, and

  • Meet medical and financial eligibility requirements that show a need for daily assistance.

This enhanced pension benefit makes essential care more affordable—whether it’s help with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility, medication reminders, or ongoing supervision for safety.

  • Be 65 or older with limited or no income
  • Have a permanent and total disability
  • Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • Reside in a nursing home

You’ll also need to meet one of the following clinical requirements:

Housebound Allowance

The VA offers additional Housebound benefits to those who receive a VA pension and spend most of their time at home due to a permanent disability. Please keep in mind that you can’t receive A&A and Housebound benefits at the same time.
