Your dad still knows your name. What he doesn’t always know is what day it is, whether he ate lunch, or why the stove is on at 3 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s usually when families in North Austin start looking for help, and the first question I hear is almost always the same: what would a caregiver actually do all day? Fair enough. “Non-medical” sounds like a box on a form. So here’s what it looks like in your parent’s kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What the day looks like<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Doctors see your dad for a short visit. The rest of the week belongs to the people around him. For a parent with dementia, Parkinson’s, heart failure, COPD, or a recent stroke, that’s where things go well or go sideways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caregivers make sure lunch gets made and eaten, and the water glass gets refilled. They help your dad bathe, dress, and use the bathroom without making a big deal of it. They remind him about his medicines on time. They play cards, put on his favorite music, or walk the block with him. They drive him to appointments, then tell you what the doctor said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The part families don’t expect is the watching. Someone who sees your parent every week notices a skipped meal, a new bruise, or a slower walk long before the next appointment. You hear about it, and so does the doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why routine matters with dementia<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Alzheimer’s Association<\/span><\/a> estimates that 7.4 million Americans age 65 and older live with Alzheimer’s dementia, including about 459,000 in <\/span>Texas<\/span><\/a>. Texas families give roughly 1.9 billion hours of unpaid care a year, mostly daughters, sons, and spouses who also have jobs, kids, and sore backs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Memory loss makes every day feel new. When the same friendly face shows up in the same order of events, your parent doesn’t have to work out who’s in the house, and that lets them relax. Chronic illness: the care team writes the plan<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The doctor and nurse set the plan. Our caregivers follow it at home, which means the diet the doctor ordered, the walks the therapist asked for, and the water bottle that actually gets emptied. They tell you what changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

With your permission, our <\/span>care coordination<\/span><\/a> team also talks with your parent’s doctor, home health nurse, and therapists, so you’re not the messenger between all of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where the line is<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

We’re non-medical. That means no injections, no wound care, no changing medicines, and no diagnosing. In Texas, <\/span>personal assistance services<\/span><\/a> cover things like bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and help with walking and transfers. Professional nursing is a separate license. If your parent needs a nurse, we work alongside one.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How to know it’s time<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Families often tell me they waited too long, so here’s what to watch for: skipped meals or weight loss, missed or doubled medicines, a pile of unopened mail, a wrong turn on a road your dad has driven for forty years, or you feeling like the only person holding this together.<\/span><\/p>\n

You don’t have to start big. Two or three visits a week will show you what works, and we can change the schedule as things change. Our schedules run from a few hours a week to overnight shifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Good days still happen<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n
